BRITISH NATIONAL WARNED HIGH CRIME IN TNT

British nationals warned: high crime in T&T

UK citizens are being warned of high levels of violent crime in Trinidad, including murder, especially in parts of the capital Port-of-Spain.
This as the UK government has updated its travel advisory for T&T following the murder of a British national on Tuesday (October 20).
Attorney Richard Wheeler and his wife, a T&T national, were found hacked to death at their Riseland, Tobago home.
A joint team of homicide officers from both islands is currently pursuing “certain leads”.
The UK government is advising UK nationals to ensure their safety and security by using hotel or pre-booked taxis with set fares, if possible, and to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
The advisory states that over 30,000 British nationals visit Trinidad and Tobago every year with most visits being trouble-free.
“There are Robbery and other crimes targeting tourists have occurred.”
There is a general threat from terrorism.”
“There is a risk of mosquito-borne illnesses in Trinidad and Tobago dengue and chikungunya fever. You should take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.”
This is the latest gruesome double murder to occur in Tobago; in November 2014 German couple 74-year-old Hubertus Keil and Birgid Keil, 71, were discovered dead near the river at the mouth of Bacolet Bay.
The couple was found with chop wounds about their necks, hands and bodies.
The Keils, who lived alone, had been visiting Tobago for the past 20 years until their murder.
In August 2009, British couple Murium and Peter Green were viciously hacked by an assailant and left for dead, but luckily they survived the attack.
They have never been the same since and now live with physical disabilities.
An Argyle man was arrested but was released due to lack of evidence and the perpetrator was never held.
