CRIME ON THE FRONT BURNER FOR PNM

Crime on the ‘front burner’ for PNM

By LAUREL V WILLIAMS Sunday, October 4 2015
The issue of murders in Trinidad and Tobago is on the “front burner” of the ruling People’s National Movement administration, National Security Minister and Member of Parliament for Point Fortin, Edmund Dillon, assured yesterday, adding that crime “ is something that we all are concerned with”.
Dillon made the comments during a visit to the Cap-de-Ville Junction and environs where members of South Western Police Division and Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) staged a stop and search road exercise.

“The murder rate will continue to trouble us because a murder is something that none of us can accept. So, measures are being taken by Police Service to deal with the murders so far as investigations and prosecutions are concerned. This (exercise) is part of the strategy going forward,” Dillon told reporters.

The Minister extended condolences to all persons whose relatives were murdered and he further gave the assurance that the police and other National Security bodies would ensure there was a reduction in the murder rate “as much as possible”. Dillon, a former Major General, said that in dealing with the “reality on the ground”, police nationwide had been conducting several operations within a 72-hour period which included the exercise yesterday in the south western peninsula.

“We realise and recognise that proximity between the south western area to the south American mainland. It (exercise) is designed to see how much we can prevent the inflow of not only drugs and guns, but also human trafficking. This exercise is dealing with those who intend to break the law in T&T,” Dillon added. A total of 22 persons were arrested and the minister commended the police for “carrying out their duties in a professional manner”.
