Rum made man steal bike

CAUGHT on video riding away on a bicycle which he stole from a garage, a watchman on Monday told a Princes Town magistrate, that he was intoxicated. He admitted that “rum does not agree” with him. In the end, Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne sentenced the man - Kissoon Bajnath - to six months, hard labour, for the offence committed.

Bajnath pleaded guilty to stealing an 18 speed mountain bike value US $300, the property of Jagdeo Seepersad, of Penal.

On Sunday last, police arrested Bajnath. After being shown the video while at the Barrackpore Police Station, Bajnath said: “Officer that is me, but I cannot remember what I did with the bike.” Unrepresented by an attorney on Monday, Bajnath pleaded with the magistrate to give him a fine. “My honour, (sic) please give me a fine. I am a watchman.

I was drunk, and made a mistake.

Rum does not agree with me. I tried to stop( consuming alcohol) ,” Bajnath said in his mitigation.

Looking at documents before her, Quintyne remarked that he had several convictions, including possession of cocaine, marijuana and a device used to smoke cocaine.

Cable guy goes to jail for swiping jewels

A MAN hired to install cable boxes in homes helped himself to the family jewels while working at a house in Williamsville last week. For the crime, Scott Benny went to prison yesterday for nine months.
At 9 .m. on October 21, the victim secured three gold rings together valued $15,000 at his Williamsville home. He returned 15 minutes later to find the items missing. The victim had contracted Benny to install a cable box at his home, and Benny was left alone in the victim’s bedroom, prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said.
Two days later the defendant was met at the Gasparillo police station and was told of the report made by the victim. He told officer Lee Lum that he had the rings in Couva. He later took the police to bushy area in Mc Bean, Couva where the jewellery was retrieved.
The rings were shown to Wellington during Benny’s court appearance on Monday. Attorney Ainsley Lucky pleaded for leniency for his client saying that he stole to be able to feed his child.
He said Benny, 24 of Carapichaima who had no previous convictions, was married and had a two-year-old child. “He yielded to temptation and took the rings to sell them to purchase food for his child
But Wellington said that his client did not go into the refrigerator but rather stole the rings. He said that Benny was trusted enough to be left in the house. “The man is a thief,” Wellington said. He sentenced him to nine months in prison.

3.9 Jewelry Heist Two In Court

 

TWO mechanics appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with last May’s $3.9 million heist at a jewelry store located a few buildings away from the courthouse. Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne denied bail to the accused men — Lerron Constantine, 31, and Sheldon Solomon, 26 - and ordered they reappear on Monday when she promises to respond to bail applications made on their behalf by attorney, Aaron Seaton.

The duo appeared, in the First Court, to answer a total of four charges. It is alleged that sometime between May 23 and 25, this year, they broke into Dipak Jewellers at High Street, Princes Town, where they stole $275,000 in cash, and a quantity of jewelry together estimated at $3.9 million.

The jewelry included ‘his and hers wedding bands’, gold beras, diamond hoop earrings etc.

The jewelry store is located a few buildings away from the Princes Town Police Station. Sgt Roland Ramlogan laid the charge.

The three other charges alleged that on October 18 ( last Sunday ) at Bamboo Settlement No. 3 , Valsayn South, they had in their possession 190 grammes of marijuana , six rounds of ammunition and a firearm.
